I don’t know if I would have been invited. ![]() If I wasn’t who I was, I don’t know if I’d-a been open to going to the races. ![]() I was in my mid-20s, and that was the first time I had an opportunity to go to a track but I got the opportunity to go to the track because I was Shawne Merriman, football player, linebacker of the San Diego Chargers at the time. It was 2008, so basically nine years ago. ![]() What do you think about the lack of diversity in the sport?įor me it never really hit me hard. I used to watch it on TV growing up as a kid, but I had no idea it was that much excitement, that much energy there at the track. That was my first time actually being at a race. The cars all started up, and the crowd went crazy and I got so nervous because my hands started to get like clammy and I felt myself about to drop the flag because I was so damn nervous, but it was that adrenaline and it was the energy from the crowd that kind of made me fall in love with the sport. A guy behind me tells me, ‘Don’t drop the flag,’ and I’m looking at him like, ‘What are you talking about? It’s just waving a flag. I didn’t even know.’ I was walking up to the top, I was about to start waving the green flag. So they announced me over the intercom, people went crazy, and from that point on, I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy. I didn’t know that it was going to be that many football fans. I didn’t think that people would really know who I was or know who I am. You know what, it happened in 2008, when I was invited out to be the grand marshal of the race in Fontana, and it really caught me off guard because I was going to a NASCAR event. When did you first get interested in NASCAR? Merriman spoke to The Undefeated about giving back by bringing children to NASCAR. He attended the University of Maryland, was drafted 12th overall in 2005 by the San Diego Chargers and was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. Merriman grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and as a high school player quickly gained the nickname “Lights Out” because players who he hit were rendered unconscious, as the story has been told. Iwuji is one of two black drivers in NASCAR. As owner of NASCAR K&N Pro Series West driver Jesse Iwuji’s Chevrolet, Merriman’s goal is to offer accessibility to youths. Merriman’s passion is in line with NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, an initiative launched in 2004, which works to diversify its drivers. Out of those 100 kids, you want a good percentage of kids walking out of there to still follow the sport and want to go to another track.” NASCAR is such a big sport, there’s so many different levels and so many different ways to be part of it, that’s ultimately what you want to do. There’s working at the track, being a part of whatever it is. “All those kids won’t get the opportunity to be a football player in the NFL, NBA, but exposing them to a different demographic and exposing them to a different platform will ultimately, at the end of the day, allow them to be a part of the NASCAR circuit, somehow, some way,” the three-time All-Pro linebacker said. 1, 100 children from the program visited Dover International Speedway. ![]() The former NFL player recently expanded his personal brand to launch Lights Out Drive, an initiative that gives children exposure to NASCAR. These upgrades and replacements, the executive added, are made more urgent than they would otherwise be due to a state law that requires all hospitals to meet certain seismic requirements by 2030 or cease operation. And, having a hefty balance sheet, he added, is necessary to get favorable interest rates from lenders as Scripps moves to execute a recently announced $2.6 billion building plan that will replace Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, add a new patient tower at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla and upgrade facilities in Encinitas, Chula Vista and Torrey Pines. Van Gorder said that it’s not responsible management to fix a recurring problem with savings. Still, with more than two billion in the bank, couldn’t Scripps afford to burn some savings and stave off layoffs? “As strong as we are on the bottom, bottom line, the trends at the top end are changing, and we have to adjust to them,” Van Gorder said. Van Gorder said the basic fact is that operation of the organization must continue to bring in more revenue than it spends and declining operating margins must be addressed even if revenue from the stock market is currently masking those declines. How can an organization be making money, have a significant financial cushion and yet still be planning for layoffs in the coming year? Why is this important? Because the flywheel size is a big factor in your ride experience, especially at heavier resistance levels. The Flux 2 is positioned right in the middle, in a sweet spot of sorts. The flywheel on the Flux S is the smallest, while the Neo 2T has a big, heavy flywheel. Think about the Flux 2 as being midway in between the low-end Flux S, and the high-end Neo 2T. This is a good time to note some of the differences between the Flux 2 and Flux S, and it starts with the aforementioned flywheel. Our experience with the ride quality was excellent - the Tacx Flux is smooth, although you will notice that you don’t quite have the resistance that you do with the Neo 2T. Fully connected, you really don’t lose any compatibility with the bike training app that you use, be it Zwift, Sufferfest, Rouvy, Trainerroad, or something else. We love riding Tacx products, because are smooth to pedal, very quiet, and connect seamlessly with your app - no matter which you are using.įor the money, we found that both the Flux 2 and Flux S provide a great indoor riding experience. You can get the same sweat on a Flux that you will on a Neo or Peloton, only or much less. What do you lose out on by spending less on the Flux models versus the Neo lineup? We go in to more detail down below, but in short you will get a lighter flywheel and less of a ride-simulating feel.ĭon’t let that make you think you won’t get great workouts on a Flux. We commend Tacx for offering these lower-priced options to the decked-out Neo 2T, much like we like the fact that Wahoo has a KICKR Core option for people looking to save a few bucks. smart trainers is really like comparing apples and oranges, which is why we really don’t consider them competition. ![]() I guess you could say the other competition for the Flux 2 and Flux S are traditional bike trainers, which sell for less. Saris, another heavy-hitter in the industry, only makes the one trainer - the Saris H3 - but they keep some bells and whistles off and price it just a hair above the two flux models. The primary competition probably comes from the Wahoo KICKR Core, the less-expensive version of the Wahoo KICKR. The Flux 2 and Flux S sit in a unique spot in the market. Today, Tacx is owned by Garmin, the maker of everything from GPS units to the best fitness watches on the market. While the Neo 2T sits atop the lineup for Tacx, the Flux models - the 2 and the S, are lower-priced options that can be great buys for some riders, depending on what you are looking for. Actually many rollers and traditional trainers are still in use by people across the globe. Rollers gave way to spinners and trainers, which gave way to the smart bike trainers we know today. Tacx is one of the longstanding cycling companies, originally building old-fashioned rollers and roller parts. Tacx has been making smart trainers since 2014, but the company has been around a lot longer than that. You can get them both direct from Garmin, here. Here, we will take a hard look at the two Flux models - the Flux 2 and the Flux S. The Flux lineup makes the outstanding Tacx technology a little more accessible who want to keep their investment under $1,000. ![]() Best known for the “hold nothing back” Neo 2T, a high-end trainer, Tacx has a couple more affordable smart trainers on the market too. Tacx is a legitimate leader in the connected smart trainer market. What we like most about the Flux models is that they give you a full ability to enjoy smart bike training, but hold off on just enough of the “splurge” features to provide a significant value. The term “sweet spot” comes to mind when writing about them - they occupy a nice price point but also provide impressive functionality. The Flux models, the Flux 2 and Flux S by Tacx, are solid smart trainer options for the money. ![]() "Doing a Tim Hortons collab had always been a dream of mine. The starlight’s passage through the exoplanet atmosphere leaves traces that astronomers can piece together to determine the gases of the exoplanet’s atmosphere. This means that during transits a tiny fraction of starlight will pass through the exoplanet’s atmosphere before reaching telescopes like Webb. This is how the exoplanet was first discovered in 2015 with NASA’s K2 mission. K2-18 b is a transiting exoplanet, meaning that we can detect a drop in brightness as it passes across the face of its host star. The team sidestepped this challenge by analyzing light from K2-18 b’s parent star as it passed through the exoplanet’s atmosphere. ![]() However, these planets are outshone - literally - by the glare of their much larger parent stars, which makes exploring exoplanet atmospheres particularly challenging. “We have obtained the most detailed spectrum of a habitable-zone sub-Neptune to date, and this allowed us to work out the molecules that exist in its atmosphere.”Ĭharacterizing the atmospheres of exoplanets like K2-18 b - meaning identifying their gases and physical conditions - is a very active area in astronomy. “Although this kind of planet does not exist in our solar system, sub-Neptunes are the most common type of planet known so far in the galaxy,” explained team member Subhajit Sarkar of Cardiff University. However, it is also possible that the ocean is too hot to be habitable or be liquid. Hycean worlds are predicted to have oceans of water. The planet’s large size - with a radius 2.6 times the radius of Earth - means that the planet’s interior likely contains a large mantle of high-pressure ice, like Neptune, but with a thinner hydrogen-rich atmosphere and an ocean surface. While K2-18 b lies in the habitable zone, and is now known to harbor carbon-bearing molecules, this does not necessarily mean that the planet can support life. “Upcoming Webb observations should be able to confirm if DMS is indeed present in the atmosphere of K2-18 b at significant levels,” explained Madhusudhan. The inference of DMS is less robust and requires further validation. The bulk of the DMS in Earth’s atmosphere is emitted from phytoplankton in marine environments. These initial Webb observations also provided a possible detection of a molecule called dimethyl sulfide (DMS). The abundance of methane and carbon dioxide, and shortage of ammonia, support the hypothesis that there may be a water ocean underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere in K2-18 b. “Traditionally, the search for life on exoplanets has focused primarily on smaller rocky planets, but the larger Hycean worlds are significantly more conducive to atmospheric observations.” “Our findings underscore the importance of considering diverse habitable environments in the search for life elsewhere,” explained Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge and lead author of the paper announcing these results. The suggestion that the sub-Neptune K2-18 b could be a Hycean exoplanet is intriguing, as some astronomers believe that these worlds are promising environments to search for evidence for life on exoplanets. This lack of equivalent nearby planets means that these ‘sub-Neptunes’ are poorly understood, and the nature of their atmospheres is a matter of active debate among astronomers. Exoplanets such as K2-18 b, which have sizes between those of Earth and Neptune, are unlike anything in our solar system. K2-18 b orbits the cool dwarf star K2-18 in the habitable zone and lies 120 light-years from Earth in the constellation Leo. The first insight into the atmospheric properties of this habitable-zone exoplanet came from observations with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which prompted further studies that have since changed our understanding of the system. Webb’s discovery adds to recent studies suggesting that K2-18 b could be a Hycean exoplanet, one which has the potential to possess a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a water ocean-covered surface. A new investigation with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope into K2-18 b, an exoplanet 8.6 times as massive as Earth, has revealed the presence of carbon-bearing molecules including methane and carbon dioxide. ![]() In Sumeru, released in Genshin Impact 3.0, you’ll notice that a handful of them are locked behind the Seal on the Stone Pillar. But the next time you hear about Valve's 30 percent headline revenue cut, keep in mind that the functional proportion of total sales the company receives is probably quite a bit lower. None of this necessarily means Steam's 30 percent cut of direct game sales is justified, or that Valve couldn't afford to lower its rates. Epic, on the other hand, provides very few of these services in exchange for the 12 percent cut on its Games Store (though the company does have a roadmap to roll out many similar features in the coming months). Beyond the mere bandwidth costs for game and update downloads, key-based sales can still access the same online lobbies, achievement and leaderboard systems, Steam Workshop inventory management, Steam server APIs, anti-cheat services, and everything else that comes with being on Steam. Remember also that Valve incurs plenty of costs for these Steam key sales. The results (for non-free-to-play titles) show that "on average, 72 percent of games are purchased through Steam, while 28 percent are purchased through third parties." And while that range can vary widely for individual games, the vast majority (80 percent) register between 50 and 80 percent of their reviews through direct Steam sales (You can view the raw, per-game numbers in this Google Doc). While these key-based purchases are still redeemed through Steam and can take advantage of Steam's suite of features, Valve actually takes no commission from sales that don't take place directly through its own storefront. The reason for the discrepancy is Steam keys, which developers can generate pretty much at will to sell through non-Steam storefronts and brick-and-mortar retailers. But a new analysis shows that Valve sometimes receives much less than that headline revenue percentage for some of the most popular games on Steam. And assuming Valve's quality control on refurbished models is any good (usually first-party refurbs are preferred to third-party ones), it's a great deal for what's basically the same thing as a new device.Since Epic started taking a 12 percent cut of sales revenue generated on its new Games Store, much has been made of whether Steam's baseline 30 percent revenue cut is justified. These are very considerable discounts - bigger ones than the last big sale Valve did, if we're precise. The 256GB and 512GB models, respectively, are usually $529 and $649, but they can be purchased for $419 and $519. The 64GB model of the Steam Deck, which is usually $399, can be had for $319 if you're willing to give a refurb a shot. ![]() If this is not a problem for you, Valve has just began selling refurbished Steam Deck handhelds at a decent savings compared to prices for new units.
